UX Design Fundamentals

The user journey maps every step a person goes through to reach their goal, from first contact to completion.

What it shows

  • The steps — each phase of the journey (discovery, sign-up, use, and so on).
  • The actions — what the user does at every step.
  • The emotions — how they feel, from moments of delight to points of friction.
  • The opportunities — where the experience can be improved.

Visualising the journey reveals pain points: a form that is too long, a confusing step, a pointless wait. It also highlights the key moments where improving the experience will have the greatest impact. It is a powerful tool for aligning the whole team around the user’s real experience rather than around the product’s internal structure.

Key takeaway: mapping the journey means seeing the product through the user’s eyes, one step at a time.
