A customer doesn’t buy a product, they buy the disappearance of a pain or the fulfilment of a desire. Understanding those motivations in detail is how you know what to sell and how to talk about it.
Three levels of need
- Functional: the practical task to get done (invoice a client).
- Emotional: how the person wants to feel (reassured, professional).
- Social: the image projected to others (being seen as credible).
The “5 whys” method
To reach the real pain, dig by asking “why?” several times in a row.
- “I want invoicing software.” — Why?
- “Because I lose time in Excel.” — Why is that a problem?
- “Because that time is unbillable.” — Why does that matter?
- “Because my income is flat.” — Why?
- “Because I’m afraid I won’t make ends meet.” — The real pain.
The deep pain is not “Excel is annoying” but “the fear of not earning enough”. Your sales message needs to speak at that level, not at the surface. That is what triggers the purchase.
Key takeaway: you sell the removal of a pain (functional, emotional, social). The “5 whys” method uncovers the real motivation.
