A customer doesn’t buy a product, they buy the disappearance of a pain or the fulfilment of a desire. Understanding those motivations in detail is how you know what to sell and how to talk about it.
Three levels of need
- Functional: the practical task to get done (invoice a client).
- Emotional: how the person wants to feel (reassured, professional).
- Social: the image projected to others (being seen as credible).
The « 5 whys » method
To reach the real pain, dig by asking « why? » several times in a row.
- « I want invoicing software. » — Why?
- « Because I lose time in Excel. » — Why is that a problem?
- « Because that time is unbillable. » — Why does that matter?
- « Because my income is flat. » — Why?
- « Because I’m afraid I won’t make ends meet. » — The real pain.
The deep pain is not « Excel is annoying » but « the fear of not earning enough ». Your sales message needs to speak at that level, not at the surface. That is what triggers the purchase.
Key takeaway: you sell the removal of a pain (functional, emotional, social). The « 5 whys » method uncovers the real motivation.
