Mastering Photoshop

The right export format depends on what you want to do with the image. Three formats cover almost every need.

The formats to know

  • JPEG — photos for the web; a light file, but no transparency.
  • PNG — logos and cut-out visuals; supports transparency, but heavier.
  • PSD — the Photoshop working file; keeps all your layers.

How to export

Go to File → Export → Export As. Choose the format, the quality and the dimensions. Always keep a PSD copy alongside the final file.

Key point: JPEG for photos, PNG for transparency, PSD to keep working. Never deliver a PSD to the end client.
