Layer styles add visual effects to a layer in a single click, and stay editable for as long as you like.

Common effects

  • Drop Shadow — lifts an element off the background.
  • Stroke — outlines a shape or a piece of text with a border.
  • Outer Glow — a halo of light around the object.
  • Gradient Overlay — fills the layer with a gradient.

Applying them

Double-click a layer to open the Layer Style dialog. The effects are listed under the layer and can be switched back on with a click.

Key point: styles are non-destructive and can be stacked. Perfect for dressing up a heading or a button in seconds.
