Every project starts with a document. There are two scenarios: opening an existing image or creating a blank page.

Opening an image

Go to File → Open and choose your photo. It appears on a locked « Background » layer.

Creating a new document

Go to File → New. Set:

• The width and height (in pixels for the web, in centimetres for print).
• The resolution: 72 dpi for screen, 300 dpi for print.
• The colour mode: RGB for screen, CMYK for the printer.

Key point: choose the right resolution when you create the document. Changing it afterwards degrades image quality.
